Add recipient fields to your gift card products

You can activate the following recipient fields for your gift card products:

  • recipient email
  • recipient name
  • custom message
  • send on date

Your customers that buy a gift card product have an option send a gift card product with a custom message to someone else. Your customers can choose to schedule the gift card product and send it at a specific date, or send the gift card product immediately after the purchase. Scheduled gift cards are sent approximately between 4 am and 10 am of the customer's timezone, and fallback to the store's timezone.

A personalized email that contains the custom message and a gift card code is sent to the recipient. Your customer receives a notification that contains the gift card code, and confirms that the gift card was sent to the recipient.

Activate the gift card recipient information form

The gift card recipient information form might not be available on some themes. You can confirm whether your theme has the option to activate the gift card recipient information form.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
  2. Click Customize next to the theme that you want to customize.
  3. Find a gift card product.
  4. In the Product information section, click the Buy buttons block.
  5. Select Show recipient information form for gift card products. If this option isn't displayed, then your theme doesn't support the gift card recipient information form feature.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Make sure that your gift card notifications contain the new recipient fields. If you've previously modified these templates or included additional languages, then you need to add the fields manually.

Gift card notification templates

There are two different notifications that might be sent when a gift card is purchased.

New gift card

This is the notification someone receives when they're the recipient of the gift card. This includes the following scenarios:

  • A staff member creates a gift card in admin and issues it to a customer.
  • A customer buys a gift card for themselves without completing the recipient information form.
  • Someone receives a gift card as a gift.

Gift card receipt

This is the notification customers receive when they purchase a gift card and complete the recipient information form. This notification confirms to customers that a gift card has been sent to the recipient.

Check if your notification templates contain the recipient fields

If you have modified the gift card notification template or added new languages, then the recipient information fields might not be included. This can be fixed by reverting the changes to the default template or by manually adding the new fields. This will need to be done for each language that you support.

Reverting changes to a notification

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Notifications.
  2. From the Notifications page, click New gift card.
  3. Click Edit code.
  4. At the bottom of the editor, click Revert to default

Add new fields to your notification

If you want to keep the changes to your gift card notification you can manually add the recipient information. The recipient information fields are documented in the gift card recipient liquid reference

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Notifications.
  2. From the Notifications page, click New gift card.
  3. Click Edit code.
  4. Add the new recipient fields to the notification. Refer to the documentation on how to edit notification templates.
