Adjusting your postal code field

To make shipping addresses more accurate and to prevent delivery issues, your customers need to enter a valid postal code at checkout in most countries. The postal code requirement depends on the shipping country or region.

If the postal code field on your store was changed to collect alternate information, such as a phone number or order notes, then you need to restore your default postal code field. Otherwise, your customers won't be able to complete your checkout.

Restore your default postal code field

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
  2. Next to the theme that you want to edit, click the ... button > Edit default theme content.
  3. Click the Checkout & system tab.
  4. Delete the text in the Postal code label field.
  5. Click Save.

Add additional fields to your checkout

After you restore your default postal code field, you can add a phone number field and an order notes field to your checkout.

Add a phone number field to your checkout

If you used the postal code field to collect you customer's phone number, then you can add a phone number field to your checkout.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.
  2. In the Customer information section, go to Shipping address phone number subsection, and then select Required.
  3. Click Save.

Add an order notes field to your checkout

If you used the postal code field to collect additional information, then you can add an order notes field to your checkout.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
  2. Find the theme that you want to edit, and then click Customize.
  3. Select Cart to load the template in the theme editor.
  4. Click the Subtotal block.
  5. Check Enable cart note.
  6. Click Save.
