Updating the order refund email notification for exchanges
If your store uses customized notification templates, then you might need to update your Order refund email notification manually to ensure that it works when you add exchange items to a return.
These changes require familiarity with the code that's used in Shopify's notification templates. If your templates are highly customized and you're not sure how to apply the necessary changes, then contact the developer that made the changes or click Revert to default to restore your template to its original state. When you revert to default, all your customizations are removed, but the default template ensures that you have the most current template version.

Update the Order refund email notification
You can update the Order refund notification with new line item changes and subtotal line changes code blocks.
The new line item changes code block adds line item statuses to identify return and exchange items in the order summary.
The new subtotal line changes code block adds a date and identifies the type of refund method. It also includes return shipping and restocking fees when applicable.
Steps:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Notifications.
- Click Customer notifications.
- In the Order exceptions section, click Order refund.
- Click Edit code.
- Update the line item changes code block:
- Locate the default line item changes code block.
- Copy the new line item changes code block and replace the default code block with the new one.
- Update the subtotal line changes code block:
- Locate the default subtotal line changes code block.
- Copy the new subtotal line changes code block and replace the default code block with the new one.
- Click Save.
