Offering discounts, coupons and sales can be a vital marketing strategy for your Shopify store. Discount codes can be generated for a dollar value discount ($10 off), or for a percentage discount (10% off). You can also specify the dates for which the code is valid, the number of times a code can be used, a minimum order amount before the code can be used, and to which products or collections the discount can be applied.
At this time, discount codes are available for Basic plans and higher. To upgrade the plan that you are on, log in to your Shopify admin and go to Settings > Account page. Scroll down the field entitled "Account overview & details." Click on the Change plan type button.
To generate or import unique bulk discount codes, check out this free app from the Shopify App Store.
Shopify discounts: important info
There are no limits to the number of discount codes you can create. Make as many as you want!
Keep in mind, your customers cannot "stack" discounts. If you have a 10% off discount, they can't also use a "free shipping" coupon. Only one discount at a time will be valid.
A discount expiry time is the start of the day entered (if chosen). For example, an expiry date of 07/09/2010 will expire at 00:00AM 07/09/2010 and will not be valid through the day entered.
Customer groups and customer filters are easy ways to send discount codes to a select group of customers. For example, if you want to send a discount code only to customers who have spent $100 or more in the last month, you can apply filters to create a group of these select customers, quickly grab their email addresses, generate a special code, and send it to these customers.
Unfortunately, you can't edit a discount. If you want to make changes, you must delete the discount and recreate it. Keep in mind that all your reporting for this discount will then disappear.
Collection discounts will apply the discount to only one item in the cart. If, for example, you have a $25 off coupon, and 4 items in your cart at $17 each, the discount will only subtract $17 from the order. If you'd prefer to have a discount code subtract from the cart total, it's best to use the % or $ off "all orders" discount.
Product specific discount codes will apply to all quantities of a product when the customer has gone to the checkout and applied the discount code. For example: if a customer adds 10 of the same product, the product specific code will discount all 10.
